The Bellver castle was built between 1300 and 1311 and it is found about three kilometers from the city center of Palma. The castle is one of the most spectacular buildings in Mallorca with a rich history.
The castle was built on the instructions of King James II of Mallorca to become the royal residence and it is made of a very specific Gothic design. The castle is formed with a perfect round shape and inside the middle is a courtyard and around lays four big towers.
After being a royal residence the castle also was home to many characteristic figures of the island. It later became converted into a prison and during the Spanish War of Succession (1700 – 1715) the castle became the main prison on the island. Even some 200 years after the castle served as a prison and during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) there were some 800 republicans imprisoned; all supporters of the lawfully elected democratic government.
Today the castle is a museum and a popular place of interest. When you enter the castle and go up the top floor of the building you have magnificent views of the city of Palma with the Tramuntana mountain range in the background. The castle also hosts concerts and special events.
The castle is open to the public all year and you can visit it by yourself or book a guided tour. Tickets can be bought at the Visitors Reception Center situated in the parking area. Tickets can be bought until 30 minutes before the closing time.
To access the castle there is either public buses (20 minutes walking distance) or a touristic bus that goes up to the castle parking area. It is easy to access by car end there is a parking area just outside the castle. There is also a small café and a tourist shop in conjunction with the castle.
