Sineu is a small town located in the middle of the island. Mallorca’s geographical center is the town of Sineu and the people of Sineu say that it is the center of the world.
The people of Sineu are very proud of its history. Back in 1309 and for forty years onward the town was the capital of the island. The king at the time, Jaume III, he ordered that the royal residence should be built so that it could be reached by all citizens and since Sineu was placed in the center of the island, this was the place.
Sineu also became the center for business and trade and the area around Sineu have historically been best known for its agriculture and animal farming. Today the town hosts the largest farmer market on the island and it is not by surprise that it is here where you can still experience trading in live animals. Here everything is sold from goats on a leash to freshly baked bread, from a pair of new jeans to leather goods.
Sineu is a beautiful place to visit with is many beautiful old buildings, including the church of Sant Marc, the old monastery which is today’s town hall, as well as the remains of the former royal palace which is now belonging to an order of nuns.
The centre of the town is the St. Marks Square and around here you can sit and relax in one of the cafés and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere when the market is held. On other days the square is occupied by cyclists who are road biking in the beautiful area of Sineu.
Sineu has not lost any of its charm from back in the history and to visit the town is to visit the heart of the island.
The biggest event in the town is the spring fair called “Sa Fira” which is held on the first Sunday in May. The fair attracts more visitors than any other fair on the island and has done so for more than 700 years.
