It is called the place between heaven and earth. If there is one place in Mallorca where nature can be mixed with spirituality, it is the hill named Puig de Randa with its famous monastery.
In contrast to the west coast of Mallorca with the mountains which dominate that area, the east is inviting to a complete different and flat nature. This is except the Puig de Randa, which is located in the plains in the central of the island and reaches 548 meters above sea level. It is located between the towns of Algaida and Llucmajor.
To reach the top you will drive on the narrow road twists and turns up the hillside. As you near the top you get the feeling that the views are going to be spectacular; and you are absolutely right.
Once you reach the top you will get an amazing panoramic view from the Puig de Randa and it oversees much of the island and some 30 villages.
At the top of Randa Hill is the Santuari de Cura with a famous monastery. The man who has made the hill famous was Ramon Llull. He was a writer and philosopher from the 13th century and after living in a royal household for many years he had a spiritual awakening and changed his lifestyle abruptly. He sought solitude on Randa Hill and spent nine years living as a hermit.
Today there is apart from the monastery, a hostel with a restaurant / café. You are able to make reservations for overnight stay and enjoy a different stopover with a relaxed atmosphere surrounded by nature.
In early spring and late autumn the climb is a cyclist mecca.
