The Island’s Unique Dragons
Despite its mythical name, Sa Dragonera’s dragons are very real – just much smaller than legend suggests. The most famous inhabitants are its lizards, specifically the Podarcis lilfordi giglioli, an endemic subspecies found solely on this island. These black lizards have developed distinctive characteristics due to their isolation and are very trusting with almost no fear of humans.
A Haven for Wildlife
The natural park extends far beyond its famous lizards. It boasts the largest Eleonora’s falcon population in the Balearic Islands and a wide range of sea-faring birds, such as the Balearic shearwater, which is endemic to this archipelago. Birdwatchers can also spot cormorants, blue rock thrushes, and ospreys throughout the year.

The island is just 4.2 km long and only 900 m at its widest point, with rock faces rising steeply up to 350 m above sea level. The island is separated from Mallorca by a narrow channel of 800 m, making it easily accessible by boat from Port d’Andratx and Sant Elm.
